Tokyo, Japan (Spring 2024) - Day 6

Yokohama

Just a short ride south from Tokyo, Yokohama is an easy day trip to make and enjoy the waterfront city with a big Chinatown area.

Chinatown (Yokohama)

As you can see, many people had the same idea to enjoy Chinatown on this beautiful day. The streets are lined with restaurants and snack vendors so you can just stroll and eat all day. It is a fairly large neighborhood with plenty of Chinese being spoken.

Chinatown Snacks

The highlight of visiting this Chinatown are the many many food stalls lining the streets here.

Meat Pastries

Peking duck rolls

Dumplings

More Meat Pastries

More Peking Duck Rolls (this place had the best ones)

I love Peking Duck but rarely have it because it is a set meal that you need to have with a larger group. Being able to just get snack sized portions anytime you want is some version of heaven for me.

Constitution Day Parades

Golden Week is comprised of several holidays. Constitution Day is one of them. In Yokohama they were celebrating with a pretty big parade. Everyone was out enjoying the nice sunny spring weather.

Yokohama Waterfront

Oktoberfest

So apparently this is a thing here. They were celebrating Oktoberfest in May and the locals were really into it! There were a lot of bratwursts being consumed with chopsticks. The trains had signs advertising the German Oompah band that was playing. I looked this up to see why this happened in the spring and I guess they do Oktoberfest year round. Some company promotes it about once/month in Japan in different areas.

Zebra Coffee & Croissaint (Yokohama)

Decided to have a coffee along the waterfront. This place I believe is a chain and had a pretty big space just along the water. They have a great view if you can snag one of the window seats.

Walk to Landmark Tower and Sky Garden (Yokohama)

Sky Garden (Yokohama)

Not the clearest day in the distance but you can make out the snowcap of Mount Fuji among the clouds

One the top of the Landmark Tower, the Sky Garden gives you a 360 degree view over Yokohama and beyond. You buy tickets at the base to take the elevator to the Sky Garden. They had some Anime art exhibit going on at the same time that was also pretty popular.

Three Martini (Yokohama)

This bar was a recommendation from a bartender in Tokyo for a cocktail bar in Yokohama. The place was pretty much all locals as I didn’t see any other tourists. They had one young waiter who spoke English serve us. Excellent cocktails here.

Bar Norge (Yokohama)

Another bar recommendation we tried for cocktails. I asked the bartenders where the bar got it’s name and he said that the original owner was from Norway. Cocktails were excellent here as well.

Ken’s Bar (Ginza)

Back in Tokyo, we continued the trend of going to bars that were recommended to us. I learned something new at this bar from another American sitting at the bar. The told me that you can come to bars like this around Tokyo and find these rare American whiskeys that you cannot find in the US.

Some examples that he pointed out were the very old Wild Turkey varieties made from the previous distiller and also this Joshua Brooks whiskey from the Heaven Hill distillery made before the fire that destroyed it. The nice thing is that you can get these whiskeys at very reasonable prices in relation to how rare they are.
