The Road Home - Summer 2022
We were gone close to two months on the road. It felt like a long time which I think is good. When I was working, two months might as well have been two weeks as the days and routines just run into each other.
When you are seeing different things and experiencing different places, I think it slows down the mental clock as you take the time to appreciate things and absorb what you experience.
When we left Louisville, we headed back to Chicago to pick up our pup and then headed back west.
Omaha, NE
We stayed in Council Bluffs again on the way home because we knew we could get a nice clean safe dog friendly room at Harrah’s and it is a good in-between distance for a stop.
We ventured across the river into Omaha for dinner. It’s a small city but they have a very nice old town area with shops and restaurants.
One thing that is a bit annoying is that they have this rule that even outdoors, your dog has to be outside of the dining area. So we had to have Ronin on the other side of the fence while we were dining. He looks like he’s in jail in the photo above although he got petted about a hundred times since people had to step over him on the sidewalk.
I’m assuming Warren Buffet doesn’t have a dog as I’m assuming he would have the clout to change this BS rule.
Colorado to Tahoe - US 70 to US 50 - most beautiful drive in US?
We stayed in Colorado for a bit before heading home but we took the southern route and I feel that taking US 70 to US 50 might be the most beautiful road in America.
Going that route, you weave through the Rockies in Colorado and we had a quick stop in Vail to grab a cup of coffee and stretch our legs.
As you keep going on US 70 - you follow the Colorado River as it winds its way down the mountains
Looking at the skid marks - someone really else really wanted a photo of that Utah sign.
This part of Utah is beautiful as you travel through high desert and canyon lands.
You get a lot of open flat roads here where you can see the weather from a distance.
We stopped for a night in the town of Delta, UT where we found a Day’s Inn/Wyndam that was dog friendly.
There were lots of long stretches of road where we didn’t see another car for a long time and there is no cell reception along these desolate stretches.
When we finally got to Nevada, we stopped in the small town of Eureka for some coffee. We also stopped in Fallon for lunch and that was kind of neat as you see fighter jets buzzing by constantly as this is where Top Gun is now located (don’t believe the movies where they are in San Diego - it moved here a while ago and there are no beaches here).
You progress from the desert to the High Sierras as you head back to Tahoe and once you start seeing the pine trees you know you are closer to home.
