Portugal (Spring 2023) - Lisbon (Day 5)

Our last day in Lisbon. It was nice again to have a final day in a city with no agenda and just explore some different areas.

Went to Manteigaria for Pastis de Natas in the morning again. We actually tried to go to the A Brasileira cafe which looks very cool with the mirror walls but it was always too busy every time we tried. But nothing wrong with our go-to pastries as I could eat them every day.

Morning stroll through town

Ginjinha Popular

I was in a bifana mood again but then found out that the places we went to previously are closed on Sundays. Per Google, there was one place close to the theatre district were you could find a sandwich on Sunday so we headed off.

Another working class no-frills type establishment. We got our sandwiches along with a soda at the stand up bar. Very much hit the spot.

Ginjinha Sem Rival

Continuing the search for traditional Lisbon things, we sought out Ginjinha. It is a sweet cherry liqueur sold by the small cupful.

This place looks like it has been here forever. They give you a preserved cherry in your little shot (the plate is for the pits). They have two small standing tables outside the door.

This guy makes a living selling these for €1.50 a shot. Much respect for this guy.

Ginginha do Carmo

On a ginjinha roll, we went a few blocks over to try another place. This place offered it in a chocolate cup. They also offered one free refill (before you eat your cup).

The lady who worked there asked if we could pay with credit because her cash system wasn’t working yet. I was paying in cash since it was so cheap and in the US they usually have minimums for using credit but using the card is much easier when travelling.

Walk to the Alfama

Praça Dom Pedro IV

Escalator to the Alfama neighborhood

Where have these been the whole trip?

Did I mention there are hills in Lisbon?

Garbage cans are latched to secure them on the slopes

Views from a terrace in Alfama

The Alfama itself is a poor neighborhood and as you walk the residential streets there is laundry hanging on the walls and people chatting by open windows. It is not until you get by the water that the place gets more touristy.

This neighborhood survived the great earthquake in 1755 so the buildings are still old and the streets windy.

Stopped for a beer off to the side of the square. I couldn’t remember the name of the place. When I looked it up online it literally is called “New Pizza Place.”

Miss Can

This was an interesting place in Alfama. A small storefront selling canned fish but you can also order the fish to eat in along with some wine.

You literally get the canned fish except it has been put in a nicer dish along with some bread and chili sauce.

Nice place to take a break after walking the Alfama. This was another one of the few places that asked for a tip.

Walk to Castelo de Sao Jorge

We walked up to the castle but did not enter. You walk by some ancient walls and gates on the way. Once you get to the castle grounds, there are peacocks with some very impressive plumage roaming around freely.

Walk back down to the cathedral

From the castle we walked down to the cathedral and towards the waterfront.

This place where we had a coffee break is called Quiosque Lisboa and is located in a nice spot right in front of the cathedral.

By the Wine

For our last meal in Lisbon we decided to give this place a try. We had walked by it a ton of times over the past few days going from the waterfront up towards the Barrio Alto.

The place has a very upscale chic feel and is also very busy. We didn’t have a reservations but they were able to find us some seats and we enjoyed some salmon, braised meat, and mushrooms along with our wine.
