Nice - (Fall 2024) - Day 3
Morning in Nice
Cours Saleya Flower Market
Flowers are really the least of the things they sell here in this morning street market. All types of foods and crafts are also sold in the stalls. There are a few street markets in Nice - this is the one for the tourists and is very popular and crowded.
Torte Blette Sucree
One of the signature foods in Nice is this torte made from chard. The sweet (sucree) one is the one that is considered the more unique version versus the savory ones.
Socca
Another signature food here is socca which is a chickpea flatbread. There are different versions with different toppings but they just do the traditional one here at the Cours Saleya.
There is usually a line for people waiting to get a taste of it at the market as they bring the pans in from the shop and lady hand cuts the pieces.
Pain & Cie
Sitting just next to the market, we stopped here for another morning espresso pick me up.
These are the colors you can paint your building.
Vieux Nice zoning laws remind me of Coral Gables, Florida.
Tour Bellanda
At the north end of the beach, you can hike up some stairs to this overlook with good views of the promenade and old town.
Fouilles Archéologiques & Cascade
You can then continue hiking up past a waterfall and then onto another observation area with even better views.
Nice Harbor - Port Lympia
From the top of the overlook hill, you can continue east and hike down to the harbor.
GiGi Tavola
We stopped for lunch at this Italian restaurant. The other reason for eating here was that we were searching for a speakeasy in this area and wanted to confirm that it was in the back of this place. Lots of pizza options here with a harbor front view.
Place Giuseppe Garibaldi
We walked by this square on the way back into town. At night this place is very lively as it is surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants.
Le Verdi
This bar a block away from the hotel became a regular stop for us. They had heaters under the canopy and made for a cozy place to enjoy the French cafe culture way of life. Have a few drinks and hang out as long as you want - no rush.
Zitto Speakeasy
It wasn’t obvious where this bar is located because on Google Maps it locates it right in the middle of the harbor in the water. We found it in the back of the GiGi restaurant that we ate at earlier. You go through the doors with the picture of an actress on them. The bar seems like an old wine storage cave. It is a fun little place with creative cocktails and a chill atmosphere.
Povera
This is another bar by the harbor. Not too many proper cocktail establishments in Nice but this is one of them. The bartender was nice enough to give us other recommendations for Nice and for Paris. It is a small intimate space and they also offer some light snacks on the menu to go along with the excellent drinks.
SuperBar
This upscale bar sits right by Rue Bonaparte which I started calling the “blue street” since it is painted blue. The food here looked pretty good as well but we just stopped for a drink on the walk back to the hotel.
Rue Bonaparte
This area north of the harbor and old town by Garibaldi Square is a pedestrian district lined with bars and restaurants.
It is a pretty lively area (except for this photo since it taken pretty late on a weeknight)
Best of Burger & Tacos
Should be no surprise this night ended with a kebab wrap.
